How to Teach in Higher Education

This basic seminar addresses fundamentals, methods and tools of learning and teaching and provides key competences for the professional design of university teaching. Through practical exercises the participants will reflect and train their teaching competency, using their current teaching project.
The workshop covers the following topics:
- The (new) role as a teacher: how do I want to teach?
- Challenges of learning and teaching in the different faculties of the participants
- Latest and current approaches to learning and teaching
- Focus on student's learning
- Design and presentation of learning contents
- Learning goals
- Meaningful learning activities to reach the goals
- Too much content or complex topics? Didactical reduction!
- Communication for teaching
- Planning a course and single lectures
- Difficult situations in teaching: you name them – we find the solution in the group!
- Basics of assessing and grading
The objectives of the workshop are:
Participants plan and conduct a course, decide about meaningful methods, learning activities, and suitable assessment and grading methods. They design teaching material suitable for their specific contents and students and choose between several didactical methods if confronted with tough situations.
The workshop starts with a self-study phase about 2 weeks before the first meeting. Learning material for preparation and self-study will be provided via a Moodle course room. The first day (17 November) will be conducted as a face-to-face-event – all following appointments via Zoom. For the online meetings: Participants need a stable internet connection and equipment that allows the use of camera and microphone.
